Event highlights commitment to drive media innovation, entrepreneurship, and talent development within Deaf community

Deaf Media Summit Explores New Frontiers

WASHINGTON, D.C., APRIL 3, 2018 — A first-ever international Deaf Media Summit, co-hosted by Eventida and the Gallaudet Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, will bring together Deaf media and technology professionals, leaders, and other stakeholders to tackle the question of how Deaf Media can help strengthen the Deaf community by driving innovation, increasing entrepreneurship, and developing and fostering talent.

During the Summit, April 17-19, 2018, at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., participants will explore media-centric solutions for Deaf professionals to use at work and to effectively drive change in the industry and the Deaf community. They will share their experience; discuss current issues, advocacy, and best practices; and collaborate on strategies to spur advances in the field. Participants will discuss 10 topics, identified by Summit co-hosts and partners as most important to the industry or community, and view Innovation Demonstrations.

As part of a larger Deaf Media Summit project, video recordings of the international Summit will be created by students and emerging talent, mentored by seasoned professionals, and shown at subsequent local summits worldwide throughout the year. The goal of these summits is to foster dialogues within regional communities such as cities, campuses, organizations, or groups of professionals within industry niches, and to create opportunities for learning and mentorship. Leading up to, during, and after the summits, a team of students and digital marketing specialists will collect and analyze data to gain insights and identify various patterns — such as media production and consumption, marketing and employment trends, and cutting-edge workplace solutions — specific to Deaf people and communities. This information will be published in the first-ever Deaf Media Industry Report in late 2018.

The international Summit is invitation-only, but we encourage hosts to make local summits open to the public. All summits will include Deaf and hard of hearing industry professionals, community leaders, business owners and decision-makers, and creative talent in media and technology, such as journalists, filmmakers, web developers, programmers, editors, writers, graphic designers, instructional designers, and content creators.
