Forums for Action

Forums and Panels
image of young professionals discussing

As we wrap up the first-ever Deaf Media Summit in Washington, D.C., during the last afternoon, we will convene in a variety of forums. Some forums will be more traditional, while others start with a panel of experts discussing a topic, with the moderator regulating the proceedings and guiding the participants to a consensus. Yet other forums will be hands-on group activities where the group creates something.

Want to join a panel, help lead a forum, or host one? Let us know!

Powering the Deaf Ecosystem through Cooperatives

What are cooperatives? Cooperatives are values-driven businesses that put worker and community benefit at the core of their purpose. The members of the cooperative are the people who work in it. These businesses can be found in every sector and industry, from engineering and manufacturing to retail to service. Workers participate in the profits, oversight, and to varying degrees, the management of the organization, using democratic practices. Workers own the majority of the equity in the business and control the voting shares. Worker cooperatives could revitalize the Deaf community and empower us to support each other in new and visionary ways.

Guidelines for the Deaf Media Summit & Discussion: Deaf Space and Hearing Allies

Companies and nonprofit organizations typically have branding and messaging guidelines, they are often shared with new employees. This ensures that everyone at the company is consistent with naming, color schemes, and messaging. Imagine the Deaf Community as a whole, what would a new person “entering” or writing about the Deaf community need to know? What is our color scheme and current “tagline” as a community? This forum will be a fun exercise for media professionals to gather and establish a guideline. The results will be distributed online and at local summits for feedback and revision, with the final version being printed in the Deaf Media Industry Report.
